From early sketches made to apprehend suspects in criminal cases or identify the unknown deceased, art has had a significant, but frequently misunderstood, role to play in forensic identification, and technology has expanded the definition of the lab or studio in which such work is done.

In this illustrated talk, artist, curator and forensic facial imaging expert Dr Kathryn Smith introduces the history of Forensic Art, and demonstrates the impact that facial reconstructions can have on forensic identification and archaeological research, from contributing to the investigative process, to restoring a sense of personhood to the unknown or unidentified.
