The theme was prompted by a 1960s hit by the songwriters John Schroeder and Mike Hawker and made famous by Helen Shapiro. The elegant title suggests a return to a state of betterness. Invited artists were asked to engage with the concept of cheer – something we seem to have sacrificed in the tribulations of recent years. Art can lift the spirit, inspire. Not as escapism, but in three-dimensional works that signal something about living meaningfully – art that inspires hope and goodness in the environment of this beautiful coastal setting. Like the song, the sculptures take on nostalgia, optimism and a physical dynamic for engagement in a special environment. Let’s say this is art as a playground for adults. Current worldwide turmoil needs an antidote. Let’s hum along. Take a walk.
