Darrel has published six books. I Moved Your Cheese was an international bestseller and translated into seven languages. SuperZero won the Percy Fitzpatrick Prize for Literature. Finding Endurance was published in the UK and South Africa, and has been reprinted four times. He was a finalist for the Caine Prize for African Literature in 2007, and his original play Priest with Balloons won the 2018 Scribe Award.

Darrel is also a columnist and an international screenwriter. He divides his time between South Africa and Greece, where he is painfully slowly building a house on a hillside in the Peloponnese.
