Enlighten String Ensemble

For more than 20 years, the Enlighten Education Trust has been providing educational support in the fields of literacy, numeracy and the arts to hundreds of teachers and thousands of disadvantaged children in the Overberg. This includes extra-curricular tuition in fine arts and music.

Since 2005, hundreds of children in the Overberg have benefitted from Enlighten Education Trust’s music programme, with several excelling in Eisteddfods and in UNISA practical examinations. The Enlighten Strings Ensemble performs a number of concerts each year – these have included performances at FynArts, year-end concerts at the Municipal Auditorium, as well as in-house events for parents, teachers and benefactors.

Studies have shown how music education contributes to personal value and life skills development, social development and social capital, as well as transformation. The principal aim of the Trust is to uplift the social and educational status of poor communities by helping them to empower themselves, develop capacity and skills, and to create employment opportunities.
