For the past decade, Gavin Thomson has made a name for himself as one of South Africa’s most prolific cartoonists. At a time, producing around 15 comic strips a week, including Treknet (Cape Times, Saturday Star and Independent Newspapers), Ripples, Koos and Brak written by Dave Gomershall, as well as the popular daily comic strip, Mama Taxi and Frikkie by the last Deni Brown, which he illustrated from 2005 to 2018.
As well as being a published editorial cartoonist whose work appeared for over 10 years in the People’s Post and was commended at a national level at the 2013 Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards, he also illustrated numerous children’s story books including the ‘And Friends’ series written by Roy Harding, Jesus stories for little Zebra Books and The Bungle in the Jungle by John Bush.
