Hendrik Hofmeyr

Hendrik studied music at the University of Cape Town and, during ten years of self-imposed political exile, in Italy. He returned to South Africa in 1992 to lecture at the University of Stellenbosch and then at UCT, where he retired in 2022 as Professor of Composition and Music Theory.

Hendrik has won a number of prizes, including the South African Opera Competition, the Nederburg Opera Prize, the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium and Mitropoulos competitions and an international competition with music for a Wim Wenders film. His Incantesimo was chosen to represent South Africa at the Congress of the International Society of Contemporary Music in Croatia in 2005. His oeuvre consists of more than 200 works, of which some 140 are commissions. Two CDs featuring his works were recently crowned in France as a Choc-de-Classica (Discovery of the Month) and as Radio France’s Contemporary CD of the Week.
