Dr Norman A Smuts is a specialist radiologist with degrees from the University of Cape Town and the Colleges of Medicine South Africa. He worked in the public service, in private practice and overseas in Canada and the UK before his retirement. He has an interest in the visual and performing arts, especially musicals and opera, and is an ardent traveller.
In the field of visual arts he has published books on the sculptor Caroline van der Merwe, and the painter Olivia Scholnick. The South African Musical has been endorsed by the likes of David Kramer, Deon Opperman, Richard Loring and Janice Honeyman, with the latter describing it as ‘a most welcome and necessary addition to the canon of literature devoted to recording the history of South African theatre’.
