As a retired academic, Jan decided to pursue his childhood dream to recover the family silver buried in a forest in former Poland, now Ukraine. Jan’s father had hastily buried the treasure on the family’s estate at the
onset of World War II, before fleeing the oncoming Russian army – and eventually ending up in South Africa.
Armed only with a rough map hand-drawn by his father, and accompanied by two dubious Ukrainian metal detector men and his niece, Layla, Jan set off in search of the proverbial needle in a haystack. Many misadventures ensued, as well as unexpected discoveries
