Jan was born in 1953 in Paarl from Polish refugee parents who arrived in South Africa in 1947 after the ravages of World War II. He is a retired Professor from the Institute of Marine Law at UCT. His main academic work is Environmental Law in South Africa.
Since retiring he lives in the village of McGregor with his wife Louise. Jan is haemophiliac, a genetic acquired blood disorder, resulting in severe damage to all his joints as result of internal bleeding. In 1985 he was diagnosed HIV+ as a result of receiving contaminated blood products.
Jan’s memoir, Blood and Silver, published in 2023, has been described as ‘A book of great humanity and courage, taking the reader on a hunt across time and place and back to the challenges of the present. Deeply personal, deeply affecting.’
